Character and Identity
The word web dictionary defines character as “the inherent complex of attributes that determines a person’s moral and ethical actions and reactions.” Character says a lot about who we are as core individuals. Abraham Lincoln had a very clear understanding of this fact when he quoted years ago that “Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” In other words, reputation is what others think about us but character is who we really are. I always like to say it this way, character is not what you do around others but it is what you do when no one is around!
Character and identity support one another because a person is identified by their character. According to word web dictionary, identity is “the individual characteristics by which a thing or person is recognized or known.” It is very important that we discover our true identity while developing our character so that the world can experience the best original us that we were created to be.
